Traditional marriage rites were supposed to be a time of merriment, a moment to cultivate love that should guide the couple in their journey of love and family.
However, the people of Umueje village, Obinze community, in the Owerri Local Government Area of Imo State witnessed the opposite as tragedy struck on Monday after a man, Victor Iwu, allegedly killed his kinsman, Bright Odi, over marital rites.
According to the Punch correspondent in Owerri, a resident of the community, who identified himself only as Cosmos, on Tuesday, told him that the youth set the house of the suspect on fire after news broke that the victim had been confirmed dead in a hospital.
Narrating the incident, the source said the whole issue started as a result of the sharing formula to be used in sharing the bride price of one of their sisters who recently got married.
He said, “Victor kicked Bright, an electrician in his scrotum over the sharing formula of the pride price proceeds of one of their sisters who recently got married. He immediately lost consciousness and was rushed to the hospital where he was confirmed dead on the next day, Tuesday. Out of anger, the youths set the family house of the suspect on fire.”
The Spokesperson of the police in the state, Orlando Ikeokwu, confirmed the incident and said the matter had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department.
He said, “The súspect is at large and will soon be arrested.”
