#TwitterBan: Federal govt gives condition to lift ban

Newsie Events Media:

The Nigerian government has given conditions by which the Twitter operations can be restored back in the country.

It said that if Twitter could guarantee that only “responsible communication” will be allowed on the platform, then it would be restored.

Geoffrey Onyeama, the Minister of foreign affairs made this known while speaking after a meeting with some envoys from US, UK, Canada and EU nations on Monday, noted that even though there’s no definite timeline for the #TwitterBan, “the condition (for lifting the suspension) would be responsible use of social media and that really has ro be it” he said.

He told Journalists that “When you have the power to communicate, it has to come with responsibilities.”

“We are not saying that Twitter is threatening the country or any such thing; why we have taken this measure is to stop them from being used as platforms for destabilisation and facilitation of criminality or encouragement of criminalities.”

He pointed out that “without security, everything else fails. We will all be losers. What we do today will define the future of the country.”

Twitter operations was on Friday banned in Nigeria, after the Social media giant deleted President Buhari’s genocidal tweet against the people of the South Eastern part of the country.

The government defended its ban on Twitter claiming that it was to protect the sovereignty of the country, however, digital rights advocates said it was censorship.

The ban brought about public outcry and international condemnations, but despite that, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, doubled down on the crackdown saying violators of the directive will be arrested and charged to court.

Meanwhile, the AGF, when he could not cite the law which the alleged defaulters of the Twitter ban would be breaching, then the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission later directed television and radio stations to deactivate their Twitter handles.
