The family of Professor Nkereuwem Etukudoh has expressed deep displeasure over what it describes as a deliberate attempt to tarnish the reputation of their son, accusing Mr. Umoren Ebong and those allegedly backing him of sponsoring attacks against the respected academic.
In a strongly worded statement, the family said it would not sit back and watch what it considers an unjustified campaign against a man whose contributions to the people of Abak deserve recognition and respect.
The family questioned the manner in which Umoren Ebong allegedly went public with the matter without first making efforts to hear from all parties involved. It also faulted the report by Nsikan Okon, arguing that it contained unanswered questions and omissions that deserved closer scrutiny.
According to the family, the controversy surrounding Professor Etukudoh is not unconnected with his position on fairness, equity and justice. They maintained that the professor has consistently advocated an inclusive approach to leadership, insisting that everyone deserves to be carried along in decisions affecting the community.
They said his philosophy has always been captured in the words, “We have done it”—a position they contrasted with what they described as a selfish attitude of taking personal credit for collective achievements.
The family further maintained that the professor’s commitment to doing things properly has made him a target of people who may not be comfortable with his insistence on transparency and fairness. They expressed confidence that the people of Abak understand the issues and would not be easily swayed by what they described as attempts to discredit him.
Reacting to Umoren Ebong’s reported claim of being a grandson of Midim Community, the family cautioned him against using his ancestral connection as a justification for actions capable of generating division within the community.
They referenced his reported remarks that “grandchildren have no limits in their grandparents’ side” and that “when ancient blood has not finished, the bloodline still remains,” insisting that family ties should come with a sense of responsibility and respect for the traditions of the community.
The statement also warned against allowing oneself to be used by political or personal interests to settle scores with others. The family argued that individuals who become instruments in other people’s battles may eventually be abandoned once their usefulness has expired, while those who send them into such battles remain protected.
On the traditional dimension of the dispute, the family urged Umoren Ebong to reflect carefully on the cultural implications of interfering in the affairs of his maternal community. They described such involvement, particularly where it is considered disruptive or disrespectful, as a matter that should not be treated lightly.
The family also warned that actions taken out of personal ambition, bitterness or the desire to gain favour could have consequences far beyond the immediate dispute. They urged all parties to consider the impact of their conduct on future generations rather than pursue personal interests at the expense of peace and communal harmony.
While reaffirming their support for Professor Etukudoh, the family called on Umoren Ebong and anyone allegedly sponsoring the attacks to desist from further attempts to damage the professor’s reputation.
They concluded with a firm message that their son’s name should not be dragged into what they described as a sponsored smear campaign, urging those involved to step back from the controversy and allow reason, truth and fairness to prevail.
