WHO ARE THE REAL HEROES OF NIGERIA? || Caleb Onyeabor

Newsie Events:

Whenever I listen to the national anthem and get to that part that says “the labour of our heroes past, shall never be in vain”. The question that comes to my mind is “Who exactly are our heroes?”.

I remember one time as a kid when I was watching a program on NTA, they started playing the national anthem and when they got to that heroes past, they were displaying pictures of former leaders and presidents. I grew up with that mentality that our past leaders and President are heroes but as I grew up and became well aware of things in Nigeria both past and present, I realized I was WRONG.

The real heroes of Nigeria are not our past and present leaders. Most of them are the reason why this country is a mess today.

The real heroes who have laboured for this country are ordinary people.

They are those soldiers who have fought and given their lives in defence of this country even when leaders embezzle security funds and do not take their welfare seriously.

The real heroes are those primary and secondary teachers who dedicated and are still dedicating their lives in molding children for a better tomorrow.

The real heroes are those doctors who despite excruciating working conditions have dedicated their lives to save the lives of others. The late Dr. Stella who helped saved the country during Ebola virus. Those are our heroes.

The real heroes of this country are those parents both dead and alive that did and are doing all they can to make sure that their children get a better life.

The real heroes of this country are the ordinary people on the streets who are doing all they can to make sure that they provide the needs of others and their communities.

The real heroes are those who gave their lives, their blood and their sweat so that we may have a better country.

People who by simple acts of bravery have saved the lives of others. People who by simple acts of charity and philanthropy has raised and lifted a dying, depressed and poor soul in need.

The real heroes of this country are those activists who dedicated and their still dedictating their lives, services and voice in the fight for good governance, social and economic justice. I mean the likes of the late legal luminary Gani, Femi Falana, the great Fela and host of other legendary freedom fighters and activists who have given their all to see a better Nigeria.

The real heroes are those who for many years have been voting in elections with the hope that the next leaders will lead this country to greatness. I mean those people in their 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s who have been voting since they were 18 for leaders that they are convinced will change things.

The real heroes are those who are using their platform and fame to shine the light on the ills of Government and demand for a better society for us all.

The real heroes are those genuine religious leaders both past and present who have given hope to the present and future generations and continued to be a blessing to many.

The real heroes are those who by their brilliance and outstanding performances put Nigeria on the world map and brought glory to this country.

The real heroes are you and I who are committed to seeing and working for a better Nigeria.

Tobi is another proof of the great spirit of young Nigerians. Believe it or not, there are people who really love this country. There are people who believe in the Nigeria of their dreams. People who believe that they would achieve their goals and find their gold in Nigeria. Toni’s tears after claiming a world record yesterday represents them all. With the right leadership and right followership, this country can be one of the best in the world. We need to get it right.

My name is Caleb Onyeabor
