A woman believed to be in her early 40s reportedly suffered a miscarriage inside a commercial tricycle (popularly known as keke) during a heavy downpour in the Elebu community of Ibadan, Oyo State, on Wednesday evening.
The incident, which eyewitnesses said occurred at about 5:47 p.m., attracted a large crowd as residents rushed to assist the visibly distressed woman.
According to witnesses, the tricycle was navigating several potholes along the road when it reportedly plunged into a deep section of the damaged road. Shortly afterward, the woman began bleeding heavily and was said to have lost her pregnancy while still inside the vehicle.
In tears, the woman, who was unable to immediately disclose her identity, blamed the poor condition of the road for the tragic incident. She alleged that if the road had been in a better condition, the tricycle rider would not have been forced to maneuver around potholes or hit the deep section that she believes contributed to her miscarriage.
She also expressed the view that Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, should be held responsible for the deplorable state of the road.
The woman was seen making frantic efforts to contact her husband and other family members to take her to a hospital for urgent medical attention.
Due to the sensitive nature of the incident and out of respect for the woman’s privacy and dignity, no photographs were taken at the scene.
As of the time of filing this report, there was no official statement from the Oyo State Government or medical authorities regarding the incident. The exact medical cause of the miscarriage has also not been independently confirmed.
Residents of the Elebu community have repeatedly raised concerns over the deteriorating condition of roads in the area, especially during the rainy season, urging the government to undertake urgent repairs to prevent further tragedies.
