The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has defended his record in public office, declaring that although he is not a saint, his administration as governor of Anambra State demonstrated financial prudence.
Obi made the remarks during a town hall meeting with his supporters in the United Kingdom, where he urged Nigerians to support a candidate with a proven record of productivity ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The former Anambra State governor also expressed concern over the economic hardship facing Nigerians, noting that many families at home were struggling financially and relying on relatives abroad for assistance.
He urged Nigerians to look beyond the immediate challenges and support leadership that prioritises productivity, accountability and responsible management of public resources.
“You have people at home in Nigeria today who are begging you for money. Tell them no! Let’s put somebody who has proven to be productive.
“I’m not saying I’m a saint, but I saved money. No governor has done it. Let’s start with this one that is less corrupt. That’s how other countries change.
“Enough of all these. We need to achieve our collective purpose of building a New Nigeria that works for all, which is centered on tackling corruption and electing competent leaders with capacity, character, compassion and commitment to unite, secure, and move the nation from consumption to production,” Obi said.
Obi’s comments come as political activities gather momentum ahead of the 2027 elections, with political parties and aspirants seeking to convince Nigerians of their capacity to address the country’s economic and governance challenges.
The NDC presidential candidate has continued to emphasise the need for prudent public spending, a stronger productive economy and leadership anchored on integrity and accountability as central issues in the quest for national development.
