20 persons have been arraigned for violating the covid-19 protocols in Abuja by the Federal Capital Territory on COVID-19 Taskforce.

The violators comprised of 18 males and two females who were arrested at various locations in Abuja, on Thursday.

Some of them were arrested at the popular UTC Shopping Complex in Area 10 and Mug Plaza, Area 2 shopping complex and Garki International Market, and other places.

The offenders were arraigned before Chief Magistrate Raphael Egbe of the FCT Mobile Court, sitting at the Eagle Square, Abuja, and prosecuted on one count of violating COVID-19 protocols by not wearing face masks.

The defendants pleaded guilty and fine options were given ranging from N1,000 to N5,000, depending on their demeanour and conduct during and after their arrest.

Ikharo Attah, Chairman of the FCT COVID-19 Taskforce, disclosed that about seven parks were shut within two days of the exercise.

He stated, “The enforcement has been on for some days now. Yesterday (Wednesday), we had a night operation and we had a very tough time. One of our police officers was attacked and badly injured in the nose and he’s recuperating in the hospital now.

“We have so far prosecuted about 20 persons today -four from the parks and 16 for contraventions of health protocols.”

According to ikharo, the FCT Administration was not considering a ban on the cross-over services in Churches holding on December 31, noting that the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 has not issued any directive in that regard.
