The Inspector general of police, IGP Mohammed Adamu has announced the dissolution of Special Anti-Robbery Squad, (SARS) with immediate effect.
In a memo released on 11th October 2020, titled Five(5)Things To Know About The Dissolution Of Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), signed by the Force PRO, DCP Frank Mba, it said that all officers serving in the unit will be redeployed with immediate effect.
The #EndSARS movement which was a protest against the brutal killings, intimidation, harassment, and extortion of innocent citizens by this rogue squad started 0n Thursday after videos of youths killed by SARS operatives went viral online.
Meanwhile, the movement has gone global as international human rights activists, world celebrities and so many others around the globe have shown their solidarity by writing via social media, including the #ENDSARS hashtag.
The Police PRO said that a new policing arrangement for tracking the offences of Armed-Robbery and other violent crimes will be unveiled soon to the public.
The Full list of things to know about SARS Dissolution are below;
1)The Inspector General of Police has dissolved the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) across all the Thirty-Six(36) State Commands and the Federal Capital Territory FCT with immediate effect.
2)All officers and men serving in the Unit will be redeployed to other Police Commands, Formations, and Units.
3)A new policing arrangement for tracking the offences of Armed-Robbery and other violent crimes will be unveiled to the public soon.
4)A Citizens and Strategic Stakeholders Forum will be launched to provide an avenue for citizens to regularly interface and advise the police authority on issues touching on the general public.
5)To deal with the report of crimes committed against citizens, an Investigative Team will be constituted which will include Civil Society Organisations and culprits will be punished.
