Fear and grief have engulfed communities in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State following a series of coordinated attacks on schools by heavily armed gunmen, leaving families devastated and several school children abducted.
The attackers reportedly stormed Community Grammar School, Baptist Nursery and Primary School, and L.A. Primary School in the Ahoro-Esinele and Yawota communities, where they abducted dozens of pupils and teachers during the violent invasion.
According to reports, the gunmen killed an assistant headmaster identified as Mr. Adesiyan during the assault, while another resident was reportedly shot dead for resisting the attackers. Disturbing videos circulating online showed abducted teachers and school officials pleading emotionally for government intervention and rescue efforts.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage across Nigeria, with parents and relatives mourning the sudden disappearance of their children and condemning the worsening insecurity threatening schools and rural communities. Many residents described the attack as one of the most terrifying assaults ever witnessed in the area.
Authorities confirmed that security operatives have launched rescue operations, while several suspects linked to the attack have reportedly been arrested. Governor Seyi Makinde disclosed that security agencies are intensifying investigations to ensure the safe return of the abducted victims.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu also condemned the attack, describing the killing of the abducted teacher as barbaric and assuring Nigerians that the perpetrators would face the full wrath of the law.
The latest attack has renewed concerns over rising insecurity and increasing attacks on schools in Nigeria, with civil society groups and community leaders calling for urgent action to protect children and educational institutions from armed violence.
