Lions club Ibadan axis, seeking awareness on childhood cancer

International Association of Lions Clubs, Ibadan axis, Oyo State has sensitised parents on causes, symptoms and prevention of childhood cancer.

 

The awareness campaign programme which was held side by side with the children immunization at molete primary health Centre ibadan, Oyo State capital witness in flocks of parents turning up for the awareness campaign and the immunization of their newly born babies.

The campaign lecture by Mrs Oke Racheal Moromoke the matron molete primary health centre on the causes, symptoms and prevention of the deadly disease called Cancer, caution parents on the need to apply all preventive measures.

They said, “The commonest of cancers was leukemia, cancer of the bone marrow/blood which is curable with intervention of specialised doctors”.

Speaking on the theme ” childhood cancer is real, early detection is key, called on parental responsibility to provide nutritious meals that’s capable of preventing their children from developing cancer during childhood.

They called on parents to reduce the rate of giving their children sugary chops on daily basis as such can also build the deadly disease on the children.

Speaking with Newsieevents, the region 9 Chairperson Lion Engr. Sola Adeola called on stakeholders in the health sector to create more awareness campaign on childhood cancer.

He explained that the club decided to pick childhood cancer as its project all over the world, having realised that most parents are not aware of childhood cancer.

 

Engr. Sola said there’s need for government to pay maximum attention to the children living with cancer, he called on parents to be vigilant about the health situation of their children.

“In Lions Club, we believe that when you educate the people, the problem is almost half solved. We believe the cost of treating cancer is on the high side, we decided to pull resources together to assist those with the challenges.

“We decided to tackle the problem early in children in which the cancer survival rate is very high. ”

Also speaking the Chairperson childhood cancer awareness, Lion Toyin Oladapo said awareness of childhood cancer is low and that’s why the club decided to pick it up. A lot of people need to know children can have cancer and that’s why we decided to create awareness of it.”

She explained that the club would raise more funds for the treatment and diagnoses of childhood cancer, adding that parents should avoid self-medication and consumption of much sugary producing chops.

Many parents don’t have the money when their children are diagnosed, they dump the children and run away or go to the pharmaceutical shop for self-medication, and he or she gives up.”

It is paramount to identify early detection, treatment of cancer in children.

Lion Oladapo said Nigerian parents should embrace information, stop treating undiagnosed treatment through the traditional method, and take children to government own hospital whenever they are ill.

The occasion had people’s turnout, was graced by some lion leaders like, the region 9 chairperson, Lion Engr. Sola Adeola and the Chairperson childhood cancer awareness, Ibadan axis Lion Toyin Oladapo and other Lion Leaders of the region.

Interestingly, the awareness campaign also feature the decorations of the PHC matron Mrs. Oke Racheal Moromoke and her deputy RAUF AINAT OLAWUMI as associate of Lion’s Club in ibadan respectively, donations of bedspread for the wards, digital thermometer and other health medical items to support the fighting of childhood cancer at the health Centre.
