2027 Elections: APC’s political machinery faces test amid economic hardship, Sambo Says

By Divine Sam

Arise News Director of News and Politics, Sumner Sambo, has described the All Progressives Congress (APC) as having a formidable political structure ahead of the 2027 general elections, while warning that economic hardship, insecurity and internal party divisions could pose challenges for the ruling party.

Sambo made the observation on Monday during an interview on Arise Television’s The Morning Show, where he discussed the political landscape and the organisational strength of major parties preparing for the next general elections.

According to the journalist, the APC appears to have an advantage in terms of political organisation, particularly in the composition of its presidential campaign council and the structures established to coordinate its campaign activities.

“The APC appears to have the strongest political organisation, with no other party matching its structure.

“I’ve seen President Bola Tinubu having a formidable team, and I can tell you that the APC is doing very well because, as it stands right now, they seem the most formidable in terms of political organization.

“Look at the composition of their presidential campaign council. Look at the structures they put in place, they look very well organized.

“But if you look at the sentiments that are coming in from the major voting blocs, like in the North, you see that the projections by ThisDay is actually right.

“A lot of people in the major voting blocs are feeling the heat, economic heat, political heat, and then of course the issues of insurgency. So it’s a very difficult one, and I think what will worsen it is the internal contradictions within the APC.

“The NDC is going to launch its own presidential campaign council tomorrow. We are hoping that it will be able to set up a formidable presidential campaign council,” he said.

Sambo’s remarks highlight the distinction between having a well-organised political structure and securing public support at the ballot box. While he pointed to the APC’s campaign organisation as a notable strength, he also identified economic pressures and security concerns as issues shaping public sentiment in key voting blocs.

He further suggested that internal disagreements within the ruling party could complicate its political calculations as the 2027 elections approach.

The journalist also drew attention to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), which, according to his remarks, was preparing to launch its presidential campaign council as part of efforts to strengthen its own campaign organisation.

With political parties beginning to position themselves for the 2027 contest, campaign structures, public concerns over the economy and security, and internal party cohesion are emerging as important themes in the developing political debate.
