2027: Yoruba Leader Urges Tinubu to Pick Hausa/Fulani Running Mate, Zone Senate Presidency to South East in the Interest of National Unity

A prominent Yoruba leader and public affairs commentator, Dr. Oyedele Oyewumi, has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to embrace a more inclusive political strategy ahead of the 2027 general elections by selecting a Hausa/Fulani as his running mate and supporting the emergence of a Senate President from the South East.

Speaking in Lagos on Thursday, Oyewumi said the proposed arrangement would strengthen national unity, uphold the principles of federal character, and give Nigeria’s major ethnic groups a stronger sense of inclusion in the country’s political process.

He noted that his recommendation is in line with recent comments by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who warned that Nigeria must avoid another civil war, stressing that many of the conditions that led to the 1967 to 1970 conflict are still evident in the country’s institutions and society.

According to Oyewumi, President Tinubu has shown determination and boldness in implementing reforms aimed at moving Nigeria forward. He added that the President now has another opportunity to shape his legacy by promoting policies and political decisions that encourage national unity.

“The President has shown remarkable courage in taking difficult decisions in the interest of the country, and we will continue to encourage him to do even more. As we approach another electoral cycle, there is a need to consciously strengthen the bonds of national unity through equitable political representation,” he said.

Oyewumi argued that choosing a Hausa/Fulani vice presidential candidate while zoning the Senate Presidency to the South East would reflect Nigeria’s three major ethnic blocs and reassure every region that it has a meaningful place in the nation’s democratic journey.

He also appealed to President Tinubu to move beyond previous political disagreements in the interest of national reconciliation.

“He should forgive whatever shortcomings may have existed on the part of the Hausa/Fulani and the Igbo people and look beyond previous political disagreements. Leadership demands magnanimity, especially at critical moments in the nation’s history. This is an opportunity to heal old wounds and reinforce national cohesion,” he stated.

The Yoruba leader maintained that inclusive governance remains one of the strongest foundations for lasting peace, reduced ethnic divisions, and greater public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic institutions.

Expressing optimism about the country’s future, Oyewumi said a political arrangement that fairly reflects Nigeria’s diversity would further strengthen Tinubu’s place in history.

“If the President hearkens to this advice and takes deliberate steps to balance the nation’s political leadership in a manner that accommodates all major blocs, history will remember him as one of the greatest leaders Nigeria has produced. His legacy will not only be measured by economic reforms but also by his commitment to national unity, justice, and fairness,” Oyewumi concluded.
