Joshua, who lost consecutive bouts to WBA (Super), IBF, and WBO world champion, Oleksandr Usyk, a Ukrainian fighter, returned to winning ways on Saturday, April 1.

The former champion was eyeing a knockout victory against Franklin, but he could only make do with a unanimous decision with three judges clearly awarding the fight in his favour.

Joshua showcased his strength and skill, winning with wide scores of 118-111, 117-111, and 117-111 against the tough American.

While this fight was his first without at least one world title on the line in seven years, for Joshua it was still one of his most crucial.

Joshua now has 25 wins and three losses from 27 fights while Franklin has 21 wins and two losses from 23 bouts.

In a statement on Saturday, the Special Assistant to the President, Femi Adesina said the Nigeria-born boxer’s resilient spirit is commendable.

Extolling the mentality of Joshua, who did not allow personal setbacks and obstacles to dent his resilient spirit, Buhari said the former three-time world heavyweight champion has demonstrated that by hard work, patience, dedication, persistence and humility, those who dare, win.

The president lauded Joshua for his courage and discipline, on and off the ring and prayed that his success will be a stepping stone to one of the greatest comebacks in boxing history.

He believed that Joshua’s accomplishments on the world stage would continue to inspire many upcoming professionals, particularly sportsmen and women, not to be discouraged by temporary defeats and setbacks. He wished Joshua a bright future and a fulfilling career.
