The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council, Comrade Nsibiet John, has emphasized the urgent need for a strong maintenance culture following the unveiling of a new Olympic-standard boxing ring by the Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Sports.

The event, held at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, drew key stakeholders in the sports sector, as the NUJ Chairman applauded the state government for its investment in modern sporting infrastructure. He, however, warned that the true value of such an investment lies in its sustainability.

According to him, while the acquisition of the boxing ring reflects a commendable commitment to sports development, neglecting its maintenance could quickly erode its value. He stressed that without consistent upkeep, even the most advanced facilities risk falling into disrepair.

Nsibiet John pointed out that the decline of many public sports facilities across Nigeria can be traced to poor maintenance practices. He therefore urged the Ministry of Sports to take proactive steps by establishing structured maintenance systems, including regular inspections, technical oversight, and clear accountability mechanisms.

His position reinforced earlier remarks by the Commissioner for Sports, Elder Paul Bassey, who expressed appreciation to Governor Pastor Umo Eno for approving and funding the procurement of modern sports equipment. The Commissioner revealed that the ministry has successfully distributed equipment to over 90 percent of sporting associations in the state, noting that the newly unveiled boxing ring will significantly enhance athlete training and development.

While acknowledging these achievements, the NUJ Chairman maintained that preserving such investments is critical to achieving long-term results. He added that maintenance should not be seen as the sole responsibility of government but must also involve athletes, coaches, and facility managers.

Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs. Rosemary Ubia, described the new boxing ring as a major boost to athlete preparation and commended the government for prioritizing sports development. She urged athletes and coaches to reciprocate the gesture through discipline, dedication, and improved performance in competitions.

Further driving home his message, Nsibiet John called for a shift in mindset from merely commissioning projects to preserving them. He stressed that both users and managers of public facilities must adopt a culture of responsibility to ensure their longevity.

He assured that the NUJ would continue to uphold its watchdog role by not only highlighting government achievements but also advocating for the proper management and sustainability of public assets.

The unveiling ceremony also featured exhibition bouts across various weight categories, offering a glimpse into the potential of athletes who stand to benefit from the upgraded facility.

In his closing remarks, the NUJ Chairman urged stakeholders to see the new boxing ring as a legacy project, noting that with proper care and responsible use, it can serve future generations and boost Akwa Ibom’s reputation in the global boxing arena.
